John Hinshaw is Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer of the Boeing Company effective June 2007. John is responsible for the IT strategy, operations, processes and people of the world's leading aerospace company and is accountable for over 9,000 Boeing IT employees worldwide. He also has responsibility for supporting the growth of Boeing's business by partnering with the business units on IT related revenue generating programs. In addition, John oversees all aspects of Information Security across the global reach of the company.
John was previously CIO of Verizon Wireless. In his 14 years at Verizon he held a number of key positions focused on enabling business growth, reducing costs, and improving business productivity. Prior to Verizon, John worked as a consultant for Accenture. Prior to Accenture he worked for the Department of Commerce in the American Embassy in London and the Department of Defense Naval Engineering Command in Norfolk, Virginia.
In 2009, John was named CIO of the year by the Executives' Club of Chicago and the Association of Information Technology Professionals. John was also recently honored with the Top Ten Leaders and Change Agents Award at the Global CIO Summit. As an organization in 2009, Boeing IT was honored by Baseline magazine as one of five leaders in business-technology convergence. Additionally, for the second straight year the Uptime Institute presented Boeing IT with an award for world-class data center operations. The Uptime Institute also named Boeing IT to the Global Green 100, recognizing environmental stewardship in IT Management.
In 2008, John was named to Crain's Chicago Business '40 under 40' list recognizing 40 notable leaders in their fields who are 40 years or younger and in that same year Boeing was featured in Computerworld's 100 Best Places to work in IT. While at Verizon, John's IT organization was ranked in the top 15 Best Places to work by Computerworld in 2006. In 1991, John received the United States Department of Commerce Recognition Award for Exemplary Contributions in Information Technology.
John serves as a member of the Mayor of Chicago's Technology Advisory Council. He previously served on the Board of Directors of Men Stopping Violence, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing domestic violence from 2004 to 2005. John also served on the Advisory Board for the Masters in Information Systems Program of Stevens Institute of Technology from 2001 to 2004. He is currently or has previously served on advisory boards of several high technology companies including AT&T, Cisco, HP, and NCR/Teradata. John chaired the PeopleSoft/Oracle Communications Industry Advisory Board from 2000 to 2002.
John holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems from James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. John, his wife Julia and their daughters reside in the Chicago area.
