LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 14, 1997 -- The U.S. Air Force received its 35th Boeing C-17 Globemaster III today when a Boeing flight crew delivered the airplane to its new home, the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.
On Monday, Nov. 10, the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force Base, Okla., received its eighth and final C-17, the first unit to get its full complement of airplanes. Initial air crew training is conducted at Altus. The Altus airplanes come from those previously delivered to Charleston.
Once Charleston has three full squadrons of C-17s, 36 airplanes, deliveries will begin at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Wash. The Air National Guard at Jackson, Miss., also will get C-17s.
The Air Force C-17 fleet recently surpassed 70,000 flying hours.
